Overview
Map position: OFFICIAL CHARTED POSITION (WGS84), 38.2405833 N, 21.3775500 E, from UK Hydrographic Office wreck record 66105 in the October 2026 release. Hellenic Navy Hydrographic Service Notice 180/2023 gives the corresponding historic-wreck position within approximately 0.5 m of published rounding. A current mooring, shotline or precise dive drop point has not been verified. The complete UKHO history records a January 2011 WGS84 chart position approximately 4.4 m from the current point. Its older 2005 HMS Echo DGPS survey position is approximately 121 m east; the exported history does not explain the change. The July 2026 database amendment does not establish a new 2026 survey. HMS Chamois, the British destroyer lost in the Gulf of Patras in 1904, is identified in George Karelas's firsthand dive reports and an academic sonar publication. Repeated dives through August 2010 followed the wreck at 55-57 m. Discovery echo soundings were 51-55 m deep, with a reported 58 m seabed. The 2020 paper lists 58 m from older evidence; it is not a new 2020 depth measurement. The current 51 m chart annotation and the 2005 survey's 48.4 m least / 56.4 m general depths have different scopes and do not establish a complete present-day wreck maximum. The maximum-depth field is therefore left unset. Firsthand reports describe strong currents, very poor visibility and mud burial. The official record states protection from unauthorized interference. Current access and conditions remain unverified; no PADI certification requirement or penetration authorization is assigned.
