Overview

The Carnatic is one of the oldest diveable wrecks in the Red Sea, having sunk in 1869. This British steam-and-sail hybrid ship ran aground on the Sha'ab Abu Nahas reef. The wreck lies on its port side at the base of the reef, at a depth of 20 to 27 meters. The wooden decking has deteriorated, leaving behind iron structural ribs that create an "underwater cathedral" effect. The ship broke into two sections which settled close together. It is home to sweetlips, groupers, moray eels, soft corals, glass fish, crocodile fish, lion fish, and nudibranchs.
