Overview
The H.S. Stymphalia was an auxiliary water carrier of the Hellenic Navy, built in 1924 in Italy as 'Nera' (350 GRT, 42 meters length) and transferred to Greece as World War II reparations. In 1978, while being towed across the eastern Gulf of Corinth, the vessel took on water during heavy weather and sank off the coast of Alepochori / Strava. The ship rests upright on a sandy bottom between 28 and 34 meters depth, featuring intact deck machinery, wheelhouse structure, and cargo holds.
Access: Only by boat.
Marine life: Documented marine species observed at H.S. Water Carrier Stymphalia include Mediterranean moray eels (Muraena helena), dusky groupers (Epinephelus marginatus), European conger eels (Conger conger), Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus).
Safety: Dives should be planned in accordance with local marine weather and surface swell conditions. Deploy a surface marker buoy when ascending in open water away from coastal rock formations.
