Overview

The M/V Panagis was a 55-meter commercial motor cargo ship built in 1954 in Germany (formerly sailing under the names Hilda Ahrens, Eckhardt-Frers, Karin Winkler, and Kai before being renamed Panagis in 1976). During a summer gale in 1984, while navigating through the Saronic Gulf toward Piraeus, the vessel suffered sudden mechanical steering and rudder failure in heavy seas. Deprived of directional control by strong wind gusts, the vessel was driven onto the jagged western coastal rocks of Fleves Island, where it foundered and broke apart. Fortunately, there were zero casualties: all crew members were safely evacuated without loss of life. Today, the wreck lies overturned and broken into two main structural sections across a mixed sandy and rocky seabed at shallow depths between 10 and 16 meters. Heavily encrusted with colorful Mediterranean sponges, sea anemones, and algae, it is one of the most accessible and popular shallow wreck dives in the Athenian Riviera, ideal for recreational divers and underwater photographers.

Access: S/S Panagis Wreck is accessed by dive boat departing from local harbors in Regional Unit of East Attica, Attica. Dive boats anchor or secure to mooring lines above the site.

Marine life: Documented marine species observed at S/S Panagis Wreck include Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus).

Safety: Dives should be planned in accordance with local marine weather and surface swell conditions. Deploy a surface marker buoy when ascending in open water away from coastal rock formations.
