Overview

The S/S Portugal was a 100-meter French-built iron passenger and cargo steamship of 1,200 GRT, constructed in 1886. On 4 October 1898, while navigating between the Cyclades and Piraeus in dense fog and heavy swell, the vessel struck the rocky northern coast of Kea and foundered. The main wreckage lies scattered across a steep rocky incline from 28 to 40 meters depth, featuring massive iron ribs, boilers, and hull plating.

Access: S/S Portugal Wreck is accessed by dive boat departing from local harbors in Kea-Kythnos, South Aegean. Dive boats anchor or secure to mooring lines above the site.

Marine life: Documented marine species observed at S/S Portugal Wreck include dusky groupers (Epinephelus marginatus), European conger eels (Conger conger).

Safety: With maximum depths reaching 40.0 meters, this site requires Advanced Open Water or Technical certification. Divers must exercise disciplined gas planning, monitor depth progression closely along the drop-off, and strictly adhere to non-decompression limits.
