Overview

The Piper PA-28 Cherokee (registration SX-AKI) is a light single-engine general aviation aircraft that ditched in the channel between Lavrio and Makronissos in the 1990s following in-flight engine failure. The pilot performed a controlled emergency landing on calm waters and escaped uninjured. The airplane settled completely intact onto a flat sand seabed at 26 to 28 meters depth, with its cockpit, wings, propeller, and tail section fully preserved.

Access: Piper is accessed by dive boat departing from local harbors in Kea-Kythnos, South Aegean. Dive boats anchor or secure to mooring lines above the site.

Marine life: The marine ecosystem at Piper features typical Mediterranean reef fauna, including sea bream, damselfish, octopuses, and encrusting invertebrates across the rocky substrate.

Safety: Dives should be planned in accordance with local marine weather and surface swell conditions. Deploy a surface marker buoy when ascending in open water away from coastal rock formations.
