Overview

Katafygi is a protected bay in Attica offering easy, shallow diving conditions ideal for training and novices. The site features unique tiered stone plates both above and below water. With depths up to 20 meters and no currents, it provides a relaxed environment to explore small caves and observe local marine life like octopus and small reef fish.

Access: Shore access is located at kilometer 47 on the Athens-Sounio coastal avenue (EO91) past Palea Fokaia. Roadside parking is available in pullouts along the coastal road directly above the cove. Divers enter directly from the shoreline into the natural cove, swimming out over the shallow rock plateau to begin the dive.

Marine life: Documented marine species observed at Katafygi Bay 1 include common octopuses (Octopus vulgaris), damselfish (Chromis chromis), two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris), common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), black scorpionfish (Scorpaena porcus).

Safety: Dives should be planned in accordance with local marine weather and surface swell conditions. Deploy a surface marker buoy when ascending in open water away from coastal rock formations.
